The difference between the American and English type Labrador Retriever
There are two different types of the Labrador Retriever. There is the American type Labrador and the English type Labrador. Both are not different breeds, there is only one breed of dog known as the Labrador Retriever described by the standard of the breed. These two types are mere subtypes of Labs.
The American Labrador is for field work and hunting. The subtype earned the title of "American Labrador" since they are most common in North America. When compared to the English Labrador, the American has distinctive physical traits such as, being taller with an average height varying from 21.5 inches to 24.5 inches, they have a much more slim and athletic build with finer bone structure, they have a more narrow head and a longer muzzle. Their tails are longer, thinner and some can curve slightly. Their weight should be 65 - 80 lbs for males and 55- 70 lbs for females.
Due to being bred for field work and hunting, they are more energetic and have more drive than the English Labrador. Americans are much easier to train than English, some say they are smarter. I believe this is said because the American is always looking at you and waiting for your next command. As they are very eager to work for you and do what is asked of them.
The English Labrador is for conformation and show. The subtype earned the title of "English Labrador" since they are most common in the United Kingdom. When compared to the American Labradors, the English have much shorter legs and body with a standard height of 20 - 22.5 inches tall. They are stockier, blockier and heavier built and bone structure. Their heads are wide, with a more pronounced and defined stop, short muzzle and fuller face. Their tails are much shorter and thicker, commonly referred to as an "Otter Tail". There is no curvature to the English tail, it should be very straight. Their weight should be 75 - 85 lbs for males and 65 - 75 lbs for females.
The English Labrador is much more docile to the working American Labrador. They do not require as much exercise as the American but they do still have moderate energy which means that they still need regular exercise.
The distinction and difference between the English and American Labrador exist because of decades of specialized breeding. Americans were selectively bred for their working skills. Their higher energy and drive, agility, athleticism, and slimmer build make them better working dogs. The breeding focused more on their ability to work than the different kennel clubs breed standards.
The English were selectively bred for their looks and temperament. Key considerations to participate in conformation competitions. Breeders were very careful in selecting the lines they wish to interbreed their Labradors with to end up with offspring that could perfectly match the breed standard and win awards in the ring.
If you're wondering what Labrador type may be best for you and your family you should consider your living condition and level of activity.
If you're a very active person with an active family, who may also have an interest in agility or hunting games, the American Labrador would be best for you. I am a runner and I always bring my Americans with me. They are by my side the entire time.
However, if you're a less active person and family, the English Labrador would be most suitable for you. As they are mostly content hanging out by your feet or on the couch for the majority of the day.
The temperaments are incredible in both English and American type Labradors. They are both perfect family dogs, as they are very friendly and outgoing. Every puppy is raised the same way in the first 8 weeks that they are born and with us, it is then up to you to transform your puppy into who you want them to be.
We are blessed to be able to have such an incredible breed of dog.
